Exploring the realities & diversity of a healing brain
Brain injury is rarely part of public awareness, yet a new case is reported every 90 seconds in the UK. Affecting around 1 in 10 people, it should be recognised as a chronic condition, but remains an invisible disability with little public campaigning. The loss, isolation, and life-changing impact are profound, and recovery is a long road that not everyone survives.
Despite its prevalence, brain injury often goes unrecognised in hospitals, with patients not always seen by a neurologist and warning signs missed on general wards—unlike heart attack patients, who are routinely treated by cardiologists.
This film examines the inequalities in diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care, with changes now promised with new NICE guidelines published at the end of 2025, and implementation likely to be a slow process.
This film seeks to raise awareness of how widespread brain injury is by speaking with survivors across the UK, their families and friends, and experts in brain science, neuropsychology, youth offending and the prison system about life after injury, and what can go awry without the right support.
Alongside personal stories and expert insight, the film explores both traditional and exclusive rehabilitation facilities across the UK, with some alternative & supplementary rehab methods, highlighting the varied approaches to recovery.
Using cinematic and contextual b-roll, archive footage, dynamic interviews, voiceover, and motion graphics, the film illustrates both the emotional impact of brain injury, the complex terminology surrounding it, and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
